We had a successful Rockhounding 101 class a couple weeks ago. This is the next opportunity to explore an area with great fluorite, smokey quartz and geothite, and to learn or polish your rockhounding skills in the wild! |

Rockhounding 101 for New Members |

This will be a Rockhounding 101 class out in the field - primarily designed for new rockhounds and club members. This class will help newer members and rockhounds get comfortable in the wilderness, hunt for crystal sign, learn how to use various equipment, and know what to do when you see the signs.
We will meet at the Rainbow Falls parking lot at 8:30 am on Saturday, October 5th (up past Woodland Park), carpool in to an old mine, where the hike will be 1/4 mile to an old mine site. From there, after some teaching, demonstration, and discussion, attendees will strike off on their own and hunt for crystals.
This class will cover the basics:
1. Hiking - equipment, clothing, survival gear
2. Maps and Apps
3. Using the Internet to find a search area - BLM, USGS, The Diggings, etc.
4. Rockhounding Equipment - picks, shovels, gloves, pads, hats etc
5. And finally how to find a crystal pocket while in the field.
Directions to the Rainbow Falls parking lot:
• Drive 17 miles West on highway 24 to Woodland Park.
• In Woodland Park, turn right on Highway 67 North.
• Drive on Highway 67 North for about 15 minutes or so, until you pass the Douglas County sign.
• Just past the Douglas County sign, you will see a sign for "Rainbow Falls." Turn right.
• Drive past a small creek and park in the parking lot on the right hand side.
